John Stennis

Principal + Owner

The throughline
John’s relationship with the Mountain West began early, shaped by summers spent on his grandparents’ ranch just south of Jackson. Those early experiences with land, craft, and the quiet intelligence of well-built places continue to inform his approach to architecture today. His professional path began in Jackson as a summer intern at Tobler Duncker Architects in 2004, the practice that later evolved into GYDE, where he has continued his career working across residential, civic, and hospitality projects throughout the region.

What pulls him to the work
John sees architecture as both a creative pursuit and a practical responsibility. He is drawn to the challenge of aligning people, place, and purpose—creating buildings that respond thoughtfully to their environment while remaining durable, buildable, and grounded in how people actually live. For him, good design emerges through collaboration and discipline, balancing ambition with the realities of climate, construction, and long-term use.

How he shapes GYDE
John helps guide the design direction of the firm’s work while supporting project teams from early concept through construction. He works closely with clients, consultants, and builders to translate ideas into clear and buildable outcomes while navigating the technical, regulatory, and environmental complexities of building in the Mountain West.

What he’s exploring now
Leading residential, mixed-use, and civic projects that balance architectural ambition with the environmental and regulatory realities of the region. Continuing to refine design processes that support thoughtful work while responding to climate, permitting, and evolving community expectations across the Mountain West.

Life beyond the studio
Deeply engaged in the Jackson Hole community, including service on the Jackson Hole Land Trust board and as a former member of the Town of Jackson Planning Commission. Most inspired outdoors, especially in the Tetons, where land and structure are always in conversation.
